Tall, elegant, and with an Afro-Mohawk coiffure, Kara Walker glided past a sea of well-wishers at the party held upstairs at Peels on the Bowery celebrating her latest exhibition, “Dust Jackets for the Niggerati—and Supporting Dissertations, Drawings submitted ruefully by Dr. Kara E. Walker,” on view through June 4 at Sikkema Jenkins & Co. and her three new video works in “Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipi’s Blue Tale,” on view through June 4 at Lehmann Maupin Gallery. The Sikkema Jenkins & Co. show of all new works is profound and provocative, exploring themes of power, sex, race, repression, and slavery in ink, graphite, or pastel on paper: “some of the finest drawings Kara has done in her career,” said Kehinde Wiley, who came in a three-piece toile de Jouy linen suit.
