Mediated: How the Media Shapes Your World and the Way You Live in It by Thomas de Zengotita

De-zengotita-mediated

Here is another book that I copped from the Strand Bookstore. I'm excited to read through this text, I hope that it is good. -YG (@youngglobal)

A provocative, eye-opening look at the way media shapes every aspect of our lives.

Just when you thought there was nothing new to say about the media, along comes a book that transcends the conventional wisdom with an original vision, one that unites our most intimate personal concerns with far-reaching historical trends in an accessible way. From Princess Diana's funeral to the prospect of mass terror, from oral sex in the Oval Office to cowboy politics in distant lands, from high school cliques to marital therapy, from hip-hop nation to climbing Mt. Everest, from blogs to reality TV to the Weather Channel, Mediated takes us on a tour of every department of our media-saturated society. And at every turn we see ourselves as we are, immersed in options, surrounded by representations, driven to unprecedented levels of self-consciousness-and obliged by these circumstances to transform our very lives into performances.

Sophisticated, satirical, sometimes searing, ultimately forgiving, Mediated tackles everything we take for granted and reintroduces us to it all as if for the first time. You'll laugh, you'll squirm, you'll agree, you'll object-but you'll find more Aha! moments packed into fewer pages than you've ever come across before.

Grey Eminence: A Study in Religion and Politics By Aldous Huxley

Just picked up a couple new books while @ the Strand. Seems like both books will be some interesting reading. -YG (@youngglobal)

The life of Father Joseph, Cardinal Richelieu's aide, was a shocking paradox. After spending his days directing operations on the battlefield, Father Joseph would pass the night in prayer, or in composing spiritual guidance for the nuns in his care. He was an aspirant to sainthood and a practising mystic, yet his ruthless exercise of power succeeded in prolonging the unspeakable horrors of the Thirty Years War. In his masterful biography, Huxley explores how an intensely religious man could lead such a life and how he could reconcile the seemingly opposing moral systems of religion and politics.

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent in an unprecedented way, with unlimited opportunities. But does democratized culture mean better art or is true talent instead drowned out? This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world's most influential creators of the digital era.

CEO of MegaUpload Arrested at his Mansion

Megagun

The story of Kim Dotcom is totally fascinated to me. This dude was not shy about displaying his wealth, power or ambition. Dotcom made millions and had celebrity co-signs from people like Kanye West to Will.i..am for MegaUpload. The irony of his arrest with the controversial SOPA Bill a hot topic of discussion in Washington makes this an even more riveting story to follow. Stay Tunes. -YG (@youngglobal)
