Contemporary Wing Presents: NEXT GENERATION (WASHINGTON, D.C.)

Picture_3

NEXT GENERATION is designed to complement the Corcoran Gallery of Art's exhibition of Mera and Don Rubell's brilliant collection,“30 Americans,” which is on display from October 1, 2011 to February 12, 2012.

For our exhibition, Contemporary Wing invited each artist represented in the "30 Americans" exhibition to identify one or two American artists working today that he or she believes is a critical "up and comer" of the next generation.  This next generation of emerging artists are those whose work should be recognized and promoted in a wider national context. These artists may not be African American, but in the spirit of the Rubell’s collection, they will be American. The curatorial concept also allows for the possible and fortunate overlap in the “30 Americans” artists’ selections, and what dialogue develops around these choices.  But, most importantly, the goal of the exhibit is to give exposure to those emerging artists that established artists see as having the potential to define the American art landscape in the next decade.

The Hidden Persuaders by Vance Packard

Hidden-persuaders

This will be one of my first reads for 2012. – YG (@youngglobal)

———————

Originally published in 1957 and now back in print to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary,

The Hidden Persuaders is Vance Packard’s pioneering and prescient work revealing how advertisers use psychological methods to tap into our unconscious desires in order to "persuade" us to buy the products they are selling.

A classic examination of how our thoughts and feelings are manipulated by business, media and politicians, The Hidden Persuaders was the first book to expose the hidden world of “motivation research,” the psychological technique that advertisers use to probe our minds in order to control our actions as consumers. Through analysis of products, political campaigns and television programs of the 1950s, Packard shows how the insidious manipulation practices that have come to dominate today’s corporate-driven world began. Featuring an introduction by Mark Crispin Miller, The Hidden Persuaders has sold over one million copies, and forever changed the way we look at the world of advertising.

Positive Words For The Day: Persistence

Persistence-lizzyshaw-lspr

With persistence

Persist, and small actions lead to big results. Persist, and you make time work in your favor.

If you give up after the first or second attempt, your level of success will be mediocre at best. When you persist for as long as it takes, you’re able to create magnificent, outstanding achievements.

Persistence is not a complicated or inaccessible strategy. All you have to do is choose to keep going.

After a successful day, instead of resting on your accomplishments, keep going. After a disappointing day, instead of wallowing in self pity, keep going.

Persist, and the small steps forward add together to create great advances. Persist, and even the setbacks will eventually work in your favor.

Set your sights on a worthy, meaningful goal, and persist. With persistence, you can take yourself anywhere you choose.

Google Taps Palestine For New BIZ Development

Here is a really interesting article that I read on the plan. It is a very clear affirmation that economic growth and business development in the next decade will emanate from emerging markets seeking to make their mark on the world stage. – YG (@youngglobal)

Bazinga Ramallah started the way most coworking spaces do–with too much coffee. "We were building mobile and web apps and we spent our time working in cafes, but we felt we were being too unproductive. And it was too expensive," says Mohammad Khatib. So he and some friends rented a storefront and invited others to join them–a space, among the first of its kind, to foster tech startups in the Palestinian territories. But even now, nearly a year later, nobody has joined.
