Fabricating the Absolute Fake: ‘America’ in Contemporary Pop Culture By Jaap Kooijman

From the pageantry of Oprah Winfrey’s daytime talk show to the Atlanta-based Coca-Cola empire, American “pop” culture—and the contemporary films, television programs, and cultural objects that determine it—dominates the rest of the world through its hegemonic presence. Does that make everyone a hybridized American or do these elements find mediation within the other cultures that consume them? Fabricating the Absolute Fake applies elements of postmodern theory—Jean Baudrillard’s hyperreality and Umberto Eco’s “absolute fake”, among others—to this globally mediated American pop culture in order to examine both the phenomenon itself and its specific appropriation in the Netherlands, as evidenced by diverse cultural icons like the Elvis-inspired crooner Lee Towers, the Moroccan-Dutch white rapper Ali B, musical tributes to an assassinated politician, and the Dutch reality soap opera scene.

A fascinating exploration of how global cultures struggle to create their own “America” within a post–September 11 media culture, Fabricating the Absolute Fake reflects on what it might mean to truly take part in American popular culture.

Tonight I went to a reception for the Elements Showcase in the city. The showcase highlights a variety of independent frangrance companies who display their wears for the new year. The evening was definitely a lesson in Olfaction. I think I’ve found my new obessions. I stumbled upon a really great article via LinkedIn published by Entrepreneur.com about the importance of cultivating genuine relationships vs looking for an ends to a means through networking. People always ask me, 'How are you able to connect with so many people?' The answer lies in that fact that I'm truly interested in people. It is this sincere interest in cultivating holistic relationships that has been the catalyst in my development of dynamic connections and friendships.

Not everyone can be a connector, but developing this skill to the best of your ability is imperative to hone, particularly in this murky economic climate. Whether you are looking for a gig, starting a business or looking for a mate the ecosystem of relationships that you build will be an essential factor in the success of any those endeavors.
